After walking 19 miles to Plaza de Mulas,
my 68 yr. old father, Neal Schneider, and I arrive at base camp,
14,300 ft. Even with our tent sitting on rocks, we will sleep well! |

“Our mules have made it and so have we. We carried a pack of about
40 pounds and the mules carried the rest of our gear for 19 miles to
base camp. Lucky us! It was a long and sometimes treacherous hike,
following narrow paths of rock and scree. I passed the hours
mesmerized by the moonscape terrain, watching billions of rocks, as
we set a slow climbing pace of 500 vertical feet an hour. The mules
finish here, but we have only just begun.” |
